True test of a bulls fertility in its ability to cause conception in cows

  • Evaluation by natural service on 20 -30 fertile cows. Conception rates provides a reliable measure of fertility and  evaluation by natural service is time consuming and expensive.
  • Breeding soundness examination attempts to measure the bull potential to cause conception. By applying standard examination procedure and evaluations the bulls potential to cause conception can be ascertained.
  • BSE are most commonly performed in three situations 1. Before purchase 2. Before breeding season 3. When breeding problems become apparent. Based on BSE the bulls are classified as satisfactory, questionable or unsatisfactory potential breeders. BSE reflects an animals breeding soundness only on the date tested. it does not reflect the past or future fertility.
