Precautions

PRECAUTIONS

  • The elephant should not be in sternal-recumbency for more than 10 minutes on safe side. This is due to the lack of pleural space that can lead to cardiac as well as respiratory system-embarrassment due to the heavy weight of visceral organs pushing the thorax.
  • The rope in case of captive elephants should be checked earlier for the presence of adequate length. If not, rope or chain needs to be changed because the inadequate length of rope or chain may lead to medical problem like choking if the effects of immobilization start.
  • Finish the clinical procedures as soon as possible.
  • Take care of hypothermia or hyperthermia that can develop during the immobilization event in an elephant
  • Doxapram hydrochloride may be given at rate of 2 mg per Kg body weight by IM route, in general to stimulate respiratory activities at the end of the clinical procedures.
