DETECTION OF MERCURY

Aim

• To detect the presence of mercury in the given sample.

Material

• 10% ammonium carbonate
• 20% ammonium sulfide
• 15% potassium iodide solution
• potassium hydroxide

Procedure

Test	Procedure	Inference
1	1 ml of test solution + 10% ammonium carbonate	Appearance of white colour
2	1 ml of test solution + 20% ammonium sulfide	Appearance of black colour.
3	1 ml of test solution + 15% potassium iodide solution	Appearance of green colour turning to red colour. In excess, turning to clear solution.
