Lesson 20 : Sewing Threads

Thread finishes

The most important type of surfaces finish applied for sewing threads is the lubrication or lubricating finish. The requirement of a lubricating finish is that it should provide a regular level of friction to provide protection from needle heat.

Another special demand is for threads with water- resistant finish especially used o shower proof fabrics. A soil-release finish is now available on some spun-polyester and polyester and cotton core-spun threads more used for work wear fabrics. In sewing flame-retardant fabrics, thermoplastic threads must be used and 100% polyester is the only one recommended as it shrinks away from the flame and does not support combustion.
