Edge Guides

APPAREL MANUFACTURING – II 3(3+0)

Lesson 25 : Work Aids

Edge Guides

These form some kind of physical barrier to the edges of the fabric being joined together. Edge guides enable seams of accurate width to be sewn, giving more accurate garment sizing & allowing the operator to work faster. Edge guides can be set so that the amount required can be trimmed off. They are set differently on different machines. The function of edge guiding can be performed by a special presser foot called a compensating foot.

A compensating foot can be used in any situation where there is a difference in height to the left and right of an edge. E.g. Top stitching round garment edges. They may be available and can make use of a combination compensating foot and an edge guide and can be used on twin needle machine. Other types of specialized presser feet may be for piping, sewing zips, etc.
