Seams

A seam is a joint where a sequence of stitches unite two or more pieces of material, seams like stitches are classified according to main and sub classes. The choice of seam type is determined by aesthetic standards, strength, durability, comfort in wear and cost. The British standards divide stitched seams into 8 classes according to the minimum number of parts that make up the seam.

Class 1: Superimposed seam

Class 2 : Lapped seam

Class 3 : Bound seams

Class 4 : Flat seams

Class 5 : Decorative stitching

Class 6 : edge neatening (fig 1)

Class 7: Seams in the class relate to the addition of separate items to the edge of a garment part. They are similar to lapped seam except that the added component has a definite edge on the both side. E.g. shirts button hole band

Class 8: The final seam class where only one piece of material need to be involved in constructing the seam. E.g. belt loop used on jeans or raincoats, etc.
