• Body compressed with small head
• Mouth sub-superior with lower jaw upturned
• Eyes comparatively small, situated below the horizontal body axis
• Colour of the body silvery white; dorsal brown
• Surface feeder feeding on phytoplankton
• Attains 1.5 to 2 kg in 1st year
• Max size 60 cm.
