Phosphorus occurs in seawater in soluble and particulate forms. Soluble fraction includes phosphate, polyphosphates, soluble organic phosphorus and colloidal form of iron and aluminium phosphate. Particulate phosphorus is chiefly composed of phosphorus present in plankton and detritus, phosphates of iron and aluminium and apatite phosphorus.
