2. Principle

An acidified samples is allowed to react with dimethyl p-phenylene diamine using ferric ion as catalyst. As a result of complex oxidation and substitution a heterocyclic dye called methylene blue is formed depending on the quantity of sulphide sulphur present in the sample.
