Determination of fatty acids of fish by gas chromatography

Lipids present in the fish muscle are extracted using chloroform. The extracted lipids are esterified using boron trifluoride (BF3)-methanol and converted to methyl esters. The fatty acid methyl esters are then separated individually in the gas chromatograph based on the number of carbon chains and boiling temperature.
