12.1.13.U.V. Stabilizers

Unit 12 - Additives in plastics

12.1.13.U.V. Stabilizers
These are added for protecting the film itself. The requirements for a U.V stabilizer are as given below.
  • The material must absorb U.V.light in the desired region.
  • It must be stable under processing conditions.
  • It must be compatible with the polymer.
  • It must be chemically inert.
  • It must be hentoxic.
Commonly used U.V. stabilizers include lunztriazole derivatives, henzophenone derivatives, henzophenone derivatives, metallic complex is of phenols such as nickel salts of substituted phenols, alkyl phenones, dithic phosphinates. They are highly effective. They are used at the levels of 0.1%.
