13.1.5.1.2.1.Creasing and cutting operation on cartons
The folding cartons came into vogue after 19th century. It was taken up by printing press people and either press (used for letter press printing) was used for cutting and creasing. At present improved platen presses are used for making carton blanks.
Cutting and creasing are done by using cutting and creasing die and a make ready in a platen press cutting and creasing die is made in such a way so as to inset and hold the cutting and creasing rule in position. Make ready is a metallic or wooden block in proper shape (with grove made on it) to accommodate the cutting and creasing rule. The cross sections of these are as shown in the figure.
When the pressure is applied, the knife cuts through the board and creases are made by the pressure of the creasing rule on the portion of the board over the groves of make ready. A ridge is produced on the underside. On removal of creasing rule, a permanent depression is formed which can be called as a crease. The board is being bent and folded at the crease line. If a good crease has been made, the upper surface will remain intact, without cracking and the body of the board will separate into its constituent piles as shown in the figure.
