14.1.9. Indian major carps

The most important fish stocked into Indian aquaculture belong to the species catla (Catla catla), rohu (Labeo rohita), and mrigal (Cirrhinus mrigala), collectively termed Indian major carps.

These carps are reproduced in captivity, but to what extent captive spawned fry, rather than fry caught in the wild are used in commercial aquaculture is not documented.

Some selection of brood stock is carried out at fish farms, but fish chosen as breeders may not be the fastest growing ones.
