5.1.6. The principal precautions necessary to prevent fires on board fishing vessels are as follows

                                                                     

Ø Awarenessand training for fishermen about basics of fire and fire prevention.

Ø Keepingthe fire extinguishers in suitable location.

Ø Maintenanceof engine room and oil system free from leaks.

Ø Periodical checking of the bilge for oil and grease leaks.

Ø Clean the spilled fuel or oil immediately and properly dispose thewastes.

Ø Be alert for suspicious odours and fumes.

Ø Check for abrasions, cracked wiring, or pinholesin fuel and lube oil lines
