Lesson 11 : Sensory Impairment – Visual

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a refractive error resulting from an irregularity in the curvature in the cornea or lens of the eye. The light rays from any given point or object do not all focus at the same point on the retina. Part of the image may fall behind the retina and part in front, so that the vision is blurred. The eye attempts to clarify the image through accommodation but this affects the entire lens equally and cannot influence corneal irregularities at all. Most astigmatism is more or less regular and is correctable. Irregular astigmatism is only partially corrected.
