Lesson 6 : Theoretical Perspectives On Creativity

Humanistic or Motivational theories

Humanistic theories typically relate creativity to the individual’s striving for self-actualization. Many researchers emphasized that creativity is affected by innate orientation, drive urge such as striving for self actualization. Man’s basic motivational tendency is towards self actualization or self fulfillment. The theory is based mainly upon Maslow's Hierarchy of needs which explains that humans must be satisfied with lower-order needs such as food, safety and human solitary in order for them to thrive and reach maximum potential. The individual drives for his individual development and try to show his potentials in different activities. According to Maslow, self actualizing people are motivated and express their creativity without any fear.

  • The motivation for creating in man’s tendency to actualize himself, to realize his potentials, to achieve higher accomplishment for his own sake.
  • Creativity is a complex character integration removing barriers between conscious mind and its preconscious area
  • Process involves individual’s regress in the service of ego. Retrieve the material from preconscious and return with it to the world of reality. Thus he becomes fully functioning person- self actualization. Lower level need to be fulfilled then only he can come to the next level and only upon reaching the uppermost level, self-actualization, where needs are related to purpose and identify, are they at last free enough and comfortable enough to express themselves creatively.
  • Sometimes, environment is not important because even the most difficult of environments cannot hinder creativity if someone possesses the ability to self actualize and, thus, obtain the highest level. In other words, people decide for themselves.
  • It makes perfect sense that a person cannot concentrate upon creative endeavors unless his or her most basic and primary needs have been met.

According to Roger, motivational tendency exists in every individual and awaits only the proper condition for its release and expression. It has been observed that motivated personal interests led to the many social creation and discoveries. Thus, an intrinsic motivation forces an individual to create something new. He has the urge to expand, extend, develop and mature. People differ in their intensions to create new productions. Some people create as they prefer complexity over simplicity. Through many research studies it has been pointed out that the intrinsic motivation is conducive to creativity and what motivates him to create depends on the situation, tolerance for ambiguity and self urge.
