Assessment of Self help skills

Self help or adaptive skills are those abilities needed for independent functioning in meeting daily needs like

  • Feeding
  • Toileting
  • Dressing
  • Brushing of teeth etc.

Understanding young children’s needs for assistance during daily care taking activities can help interventionists in planning ISFP. The attainment of self help skills is directly related to child’s motor abilities. For example

  • Child with poor oral motor skills may have difficulty sucking from a bottle or breast and
  • A child with low muscle tone may be delayed in learning to hold his own bottle.
