Improvement in understanding Seriation

Life Span Development II: School age and Adolescence 3 (2+1)

Lesson 4 : Cognitive development during Late childhood

Improvement in understanding Seriation

During the late childhood, the children understand the logic of serial position. For ex. if we ask the children to arrange the sticks that vary in length in order from the largest to the shortest, a preoperational child may arrange them slowly in a discontinuous way, usually by comparing pairs of sticks. He may not understand the comparative length of the number of objects and are likely to be distracted by other dimensions such as visual alignment. But, concrete operational children can control the apparent height by aligning the basis of the sticks and focusing on their actual length.

Transitivity: understanding necessary relations among elements in a series.

Ex. A is taller than B
B is taller than C
C is taller than D
D is taller than A or not ?
