Lesson 25 : Social Behaviour During Adolescence

Peer Group

As peer group interactions become more elaborate. Adolesence learn to appreciate diverse view points, become sensitive to norms and pressures from groups and experience the intimacy of friendship.

During adolescence, peer group becomes a source of feedback and self validation, the significance of which loosens the ties with family members. Peer groups help adolescents develop an identity; adopt to their environment and interpersonal relationships activities. Families nurture self esteem, peer group is a crucible for self evaluation.

Adolescents learn more about themselves as their skills are appraised by others outside the family. Peer group is defined as the collection of persons who constitute one’s associates. Increasing relationship with peers of both the sexes serve as an introduction to later adulthood relations in work and social relations.
