ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT OF ECCD PROGRAMMES
Lesson 08: Management of ECE programmes- Equipping the center

Adult spaces

Even a small center requires some office space, a locked file cabinet for records at the very minimum. If a separate room is not available it is preferable to eliminate having a desk for teacher since it would take so much of the children’s play space. Furthermore the effective teacher of young children does not use a desk while working with the children and paper work will be done while the children nap or after school.

  1. When office space is provided the basic furnishings for each occupant are two chairs, a desk, a file cabinet and a shelf. A desk and cabinet should be shared by teachers who share most of their time in the class room. A type writer or computer and a calculator is useful. Directors of large centers find that copying machines are better with the investments in terms of money and time in duplicating such items as newsletters, forms etc.
  2. The staff needs a place for meetings. When staff meetings are held after the children leave classrooms can be used. However it is generally more comfortable for the adults attending meetings in a space furnished with adult sized chairs and tables. Comfortable furniture should be provided to be used by parents who come to the center for conferences and for consultants who meet the staff members.
