Lesson 34 : Calcium

In Adults

Calcium deficiency leads to osteoporosis a condition in which rarefaction (decalcification) of the bone occurs due to calcium deficit in the diet. Osteoporosis makes the bones weak and more likely to break. Anyone can develop osteoporosis, but it is common in older women. Fractures of the brittle bones occur even after minor accidents, pain due to fractures of vertebrae may radiate round the trunk, to the buttocks or down the legs. Healing of fractures is not impaired in osteoporosis and pain subsides as soon as the fractures are healed.

The treatment consists in giving a well balanced diet containing about 1 to 1.5g calcium along with vitamin D (400 to 800 I.U.)
