Lesson 10 : Bones Classification

Gloossary

Bone Matrix: is organic proteinaceous part of bone in which calcium salts are deposited. It consists of collagen.
Compact/Cortical Bone
: is solid outer part of bone which is den sly packed with bone minerals.
Spongy/Cancellous Bone:
is miner softer part of bones having hollow spaces.
Epiphysis:
is the extreme portion of long bones which articulates with other bones.
Diaphysis:
is the middle main part (shaft) of long bone which provides rigidity to the bone.
Metaphysis:
is the part below epiphysis and diaphysis containing epiphysial cartilage.
Periosteum
: is outermost covering of bones which surrounds the bone from all over.
Endosteum
: is inner most lining of bones which is situated toward medullary cavity.
Bone marrow:
is soft tissue present in the medullary cavity of bones which is source of various blood cells.
Epiphysial cartilage:
is a cartilaginous covering present around epiphysis of long bones which is responsible for elongation of bones.
Synovial membrane: is serous membrane lining synovial cavity which secretes synovial fluid.
