Lesson 10 : Bones Classification

Functions of Skeletal System

  • Support: to provide structural support to the body.
  • Protection: to protect the delicate internal organs from injuries e.g. skull protects brain, vertebral column for spinal cord, thorax for heart & lungs etc.
  • Leverage or movements: Bones acts as a site for the attachment of muscles which play a role both in locomotion and movements. Limb bones are essentially levers operated by the muscles whose tendons attach to them. Much of their surface texture and the shape are adapted for these attachments.
  • Storage: Bones acts as a reservoir for calcium, which is required for the maintenance of nerve and muscle function. Females often need to draw on this store during pregnancy and lactation.
  • Synthesis: Bone marrow tissue is responsible for the production of blood cells. Red marrow produces RBC, WBCs
