Lesson 5: Yarn Types

Novelty yarns

These are yarns that have irregularities at regular intervals creating interesting effects to fabrics made with them. Yarns that undergo these irregularities may be either single, plied, cord or may be a spun or filament yarn or combination of yarn types. The strength of yarn is sacrificed due to these irregularities, and so these yarns are used in the weft direction of the cloth. There is a great variety of novelty yarns available in the market such as

  1. Slub yarn
  2. Chenille yarns
  3. Loop, Curl or Boucle
  4. A spiral / corkscrew yarn
  5. Ratine
  6. Spot,nub or knop
