Tie and dye

In this tiny fabric puffs are held or pulled and tied with thread that has been dipped in wax. Tying is carried out in various fashions to obtain different designs. After tying, the fabric is dipped in dye bath and later washed in cold water. When the thread is removed design is seen in the resisted areas.

If two, three, or more colors are required in the design, tying should be done on the base fabric first and later after first dyeing it is retied to resist the first colour in areas required. Further, after second dyeing, it is retied to resist second colour too. But one has to remember that when more than one colour is to be used, then the first colour should be the lightest like yellow followed by orange, red and finally black or blue. In using more than one colour, the interaction of colours has to be taken care of for a pleasing scheme.

Use of various materials like stones, beads, rocks etc is done to get various designs. Stitching the fabric along the outline of the design, pulling the fabric and dyeing also creates a design called ‘tritic’
