Energy

Normal and Therapeutic Nutrition 3(2+1)
Lesson 7:Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA)

Energy

Only nutrient where extra allowances are not made. The energy requirement of an individual is the level of energy intake from food that will balance energy expenditure when the individual has a body size and composition and level of physical activity, consistent with long term good health that will allow for maintenance of economically necessary and socially desirable activity.

The unit of energy is the Kilo calorie. Recently, International Union of Sciences and International Union of Nutritional Sciences adopted “Joule” as unit of energy.

Kilo calories: The heat required to raise the temperature of 1 kg of water by 10 C from 14.50C to 15.50 C.

Joule: The energy required to move 1 kg mass by 1 meter by a force of 1 Newton acting on it.

One Newton is the force needed to accelerate 1 kg mass by 1 m per sec2.

1 Kcal = 4.184 KJ (Kilo Joules)

1000 KCal = 4184 KJ = 4.18 MJ (Mega Joules)

1 KJ = 0.239 Kcal
