Lesson 22:Nutrition During Childhood

Growth and Development

Growth slows down as the child enters into the second year. Between one and two years of age the child may grow about 5 inches in height and after two years this reduces to about 2 ½ / year till the onset of adolescence. Similarly weight too increases around 2-3 kgs per year. Bones lengthen and muscles develop and all other tissues also grow indicating that overall growth is taking place. The brain and nervous system mature at a tremendous pace and children gain more control over their bodies and learn many skills. They also learn to assert themselves about the type of food they eat.
