Lesson 07: Camera care

Battery Care

  • Identify and learn about your battery type. There are three types of batteries-lead acid (used in cars, etc.), nickel cadmium (often rechargeable and rarely used with camcorders), and lithium ion (also called Lion and the most popular and study batteries often used with camcorders).
  • Very hot or cold conditions can affect a battery's performance. If shooting in Ladakh, keep them around a heater. If shooting in Rajasthan or Gujarat, where temperatures can go up to 49 degrees, keep them in carry bags and if possible in air-conditioned rooms.
  • Constantly note charged batteries and separate them from discharged ones. Although you do not have to completely discharge a Li-ion battery, since all batteries look alike, separating the discharged ones from the fully charged ones makes a lot of sense.
  • Always use the right battery charger, but do not overcharge. A common way of charging batteries is after the day's shoot, when preparing for the next day.
  • If you are travelling to places where there is no power supply, carry enough extra fully-charged batteries.
  • Remove batteries from camcorders after a shoot.
