Lesson 16: Elements of Video Production: Editing

Summary

The term editing is often used in two slightly different ways. Sometimes it refers to the process of selecting and re-recording just the good footage, eliminating the bad. Sometimes the term is used for the whole post-production process, including titling, effects, etc. The edit is a transition between two shots. Six elements have to be satisfied in order to qualify for a good edit-motivation, information, composition, sound, camera angle, and continuity. An editor must remember to maintain continuity of movement, continuity of position, and continuity of sound. Transitions are changeovers from one shot scene/sequence to another. Transitions are classified as the cut, the dissolve, the wipe, and the fade .
