Shower types, styles and sizes

Showers may be installed for use in a bathtub or they may be in a separate shower stall. There should always be at least one bathtub in a house, but stall showers may be used in remaining bathrooms. The standard height of a shower head is 66 inches for men and 60 inches for women.
Types

  1. Hand-held shower:This type of shower can be installed in any bathtub provided the walls are covered with a waterproof material. These showers come with a special diversion spout and the water reaches the shower head by means of a flexible metal line. One type of shower head is hung on a hook at the required height. Another type is mounted on a 5-foot vertical rod and attached to the water outlet by means of a flexible hose.

  3. Stall Showers: They are 34 X 32 inches wide, a slightly larger 36-inch square is recommended. This type is constructed entirely of ceramic tile. When installing this shower particular attention has to be paid to the waterproof base and the installation procedures. Other stall showers have a preformed base with the surround touching the top of the 5-6 inch deep base. This preformed base is less slippery than a base of tile. Shower walls may also be constructed of any of the solid surface materials.

  4. The J-Shower Tower: This features a full-size whirlpool bath combined with an elegant, curved showmer enclosure. The unit offers optimal hydrotherapy provided by four patented Powerpro jets as well as convenient showering, all in one compact. They are available in two sizes: 6 or 72 inches long X 32 inches wide X 96 inches high.

  6. Master bath Showers’: They are designed in such a way as no door or curtain is required. These shower stalls have walls so placed that the water is contained within the wet area.

  7. Prefabricated / Modular Showers: These are available as complete modules, which include the shower base and surrounding wall finishes. Of this type, some are multipiece units, in which the base, walls,m and in some cases ceilings are separate entities, which are installed together to achieve a watertight seal and visual appearance. Other prefabricated are available in one piece with walls, base and sometimes a ceiling constructed as a single element. Both the multi-piece and one – piece units come in a range of options such as built-in seats, garb bars and colors and are available in fiberglass and acrylic. Both types are available in various sizes and shapes. The advantages of this type of shower include lower installation costs and also ease of maintenance. Depending on the size and design, prefabricated shower units require a shower door, a curtain, or some form of screen, which work to keep adjacent areas dry. Glass shower doors are readily available in sliding or swing-type designs.

  8. Site- Built Showers: These are those types that are constructed without the use of prefavbricated modules or receptors (shower bases). This is not restricted by the size or shape of prefabricated units. In this the shower floor is sloped, typically ¼ inch per foot to the drain. This requires a depressed area in the construction below the stall or that the shower itself is raised above the floor level and then sloped down to the drain, which in turn requires some form of step or ramped transition threshold at the entry to the shower.
  9. Massage Showers: A Massage shower is designed with patterned water flows to reducem tension in the users muscles. Health benefits include increased heat rate, increased blood flow, and cleansing of skin and sweat glands. These provide relaxation due to close proximity of jets or air bubbles coming out of the shower. These are created out of wide choice of materials such as plastic, chrome, glass, metals and ceramic. The metals used are brass, copper, aluminum, cast iron, wrought iron etc., and are provided with finishes such as antique, lacquer, patina, rusted, silver- plated and polished.

  15. Steam Showers: Shower having a steam head is a steam shower. Steam generator is considered as the heart of the steam shower. They are small sized electric boilers that hide in a vanity, closet, basement or heated attic near the shower. Steam generator should be placed in such a place where it can be accessed easily for repair. Normally the steam generator consists of water feed and electric supply. The size of the shower determines the capacity of the generator. For steam shower bath, water vapor is prevented from being escaped into the main part of the bathroom, avoiding damage to drywall, paint, or wallpaper. Today all the gyms and the health spas consist of steam shower rooms. Due to lower cost involved in the installation of steam shower and an associated appearance of luxury spa products in the bathrooms of middle and high income families, it is coming into fashion increasingly year after year.
Steam shower manufacturers now make steam shower rooms consisting of shower units with jets located above the head, along the back or behind the lower legs. Apart from this nowadays, steam showers also consist of additional features like foot massagers, ceiling rain showers, radios, telephones, audio input from an MP3 or CD player, chroma therapy or aroma therapy.

Installing Steam Shower
While installing a steam cabin/cubicle one should not use drywall as a substrate or mastic as a bonding agent. One can choose Cement backer board as it will not deteriorate with steam. Latex-modified thinnest mortar can be used for binding the stone or tile to the wall substrate. If you are installing stone, skim-coat the back of each piece with thinnest mortar to block the pores and to help the stone havdenser composition. Latex modified and epoxy can be used for grouting purpose.
