Lesson 10 : Neckline Finishes

Facings

Facings are edge finishes that are turned back at the edge and are only visible on one side of the garment. Facings are sections of material that finish the edge without protruding; a binding extends beyond the edge. Bias facing is finished with a bias strip, where the strip is attached on the right side of the garment, completely turned on the wrong side and finished with hemming.

A facing can be made either wide or narrow and can be made on the wrong side as a finish or on the right side as a trimming. All facings finished wider than one inch should be termed as ‘shaped facing’.

Types of facings:
  • Fitted
  • Decorative
  • Bias facing
