Stages Of Family Life Cycle And Housing Demand

Single Adult - Unmarried / Widow
A small house or apartment located close to work and recreation.

Single Adult, Middle-Aged
A small ownership apartment or independent house in a housing colony or condominium, located near work and recreational facilities is mostly preferred choice.

Single-Parent Family
Single family homes prefer to live in small house, located near work, shopping, and schools. A safer and more secured environment is preferred.

Beginning Family
This stage is called as a period of Establishment. The new couple join to form a family through marriage. Husband and wife alone make up the family.

  • Firstly they try to understand each other.
  • Secondly it involves the formation of a marital system and realignment of relationships with new families and friends of the spouses.
  • The other changes include reorientation of self in relation to family of origin.
  • They become financially independent.

Housing Requirements

  • The requirements which the couple makes of a dwelling are relatively simple as the family size is small.

  • They need affordable private dwelling usually rented or may be own, located where they can develop risible independence away from parental supervision.
  • The house may have two or three rooms including a private bath would be considered sufficient as family space needs are small.
  • A study/ workspace may also be needed with the rise in the trend of couples pursuing further studies or prefer working at home.

Expanding Family .

  • It starts with the birth of the first child until the last child leaves home
  • Family begins to expand in approximately one and half to three years after marriage.
  • The arrival of children, their growth and development may bring many changes in the pattern of life for the family and the demands made on the family dwelling.

  • The family may need to entertain people of importance to the husband’s business or profession.
  • Emotionally binding grows stronger in the family.
  • There is a new focus on midlife, marital and career issues and the beginning shift toward joint caring for the older generation when both children and aging parents demand attention, creating what is now called the sandwich generation.

Housing Requirements

  • More space is needed for personal, group, social, leisure and work-oriented activities of every individual.
  • Probably a house is taken to provide more interior space and outdoor play area. A bedroom is needed for each two children of the same sex or each separate child of opposite sex. Safe play space for children within sight indoors and outside.

  • An additional place is needed where the adults can relax or receive their guests and where the children can also entertain themselves or study or pursue their hobbies.
  • Family requires accommodation which has the basic amenities and appropriate facilities in terms of thermal comfort – heating, ventilation and insulation; bath, wash basin, sink and inside WC, free from serious disrepair, and free from defects, for example – structural defects, dampness and moulds.
  • Housing should be suitable and accessible to meets the needs of disabled family members.
  • Appropriate repairs and improvements are made to maintain a decent standard of accommodation.
  • At the end of expanding stage demands upon income increases, children are influenced by peer groups; these get set with specific emotional and physical needs and gradually take the shape of their living habits. This influences additional space to suit to the standard of living of the family which is influenced by economic condition of family
  • During this stage, a family looks for housing locations with best advantages/opportunities for children in the areas of education, career and skill development

Contracting Family

  • This stage starts with change in family size due to vocational adjustment of children and marriage of first to last child. r
  • Family income is at peak of both parents
  • The family size undergoes a period of financial recovery after settlement of children in vocation or by marriage
  • Starts and continues retirement.

Housing Requirements

  • Housing needs shrinks like that of family income and physical energy
  • Elders may rent out a big portion for making additional income or may opt to move to a small house.

  • Independent living for senior citizens or elderly refers to residence in a compact, easy-to-maintain, private apartment or house within a community of seniors.
  • Retired people prefer to live with community of peers, where they can enjoy ready access to a wide variety of social, cultural and fitness activities.
