Lesson 17 : Designing Support Service Spaces

Laundry Area/Room

It is the act of caring clothes and household linen. Everyday lot of clothing and household linens is washed in a home based on family size. Laundry space are typically a home organizer’s nightmare. They are those little messy areas that just keep getting cluttered no matter how hard we try to organize them. In rural homes the courtyard or open place is used as for laundry. However in the recent past, three factors have altered the nature of this chore:

  • The development of automatic washers and dryers
  • The trend toward bringing laundry equipment into the home;
  • The evolution of fabrics that require minimum care.

The provisions for home laundering range from sinks or wash basin in which small things can be rinsed out to a fully equipped separate laundry room. Space required for laundry is influence by the family size and age of family members, frequency of changing home linen, and the attitude toward sending out laundry. For example – If economy of time is more pressing than economy of money; a family may prefer to have the laundry dealt with by commercial services and vice-versa .

Laundry activities fall into four categories:

  • Receiving, sorting and preparing, steps that require a counter, a cart, sorting bins, or simply the top of the washer, plus a sink or tub for pre-soaking.
  • Washing, this necessitates laundry tubs and/or an automatic washer, as well as storage for supplies.
  • Drying in an automatic dryer or convenient drying yard, with some provision for drip drying indoors. The foldable drying stands and the retractable drying strings are also good options that minimize visible equipment during the rest of the day.
  • Finishing and ironing, which require a folding counter, an iron and ironing board plus space to put unfinished and un-ironed laundry and also space and equipment for mending.

In small houses and apartments, laundry space may be reduced to a minimum and compacted into the kitchen or closet. A separate laundry room however segregate the clutter and noise of laundry processing. Since most laundry originates in and returns to bedrooms and bathrooms, this location needs attention. Points to be considered while designing laundry are -

  • Location - The design of a laundry room is governed by the size of the space available. The position and availability of the services, such as drainage, power, water supply, light or windows, doorways, and outside walls for the provision of ventilation determines its location.
  • Good lighting – Lighting up the laundry area can bring up a dramatic difference in the space. Also having windows through which light and air can flow in would be a good boost to the whole washing experience
  • Orderly Arrangement – Like any other room, unnecessary clutter can give the space a dirty look. Having a closed basket for dumping soiled clothes rather than heaping them on the floor or inside the cabinet would give a more organized look.
  • Having overhead closed cabinet spaces gives more space and scope for orderly arrangement of laundry supplies.
  • The wall attached ironing board is an ideal option for laundry areas with less space. Having the iron box in the laundry room ensures that clothes leave the laundry room in wearable form.
  • Like any other area, the ambience of the laundry room makes the work pleasant and puts work at ease.
