Lettering placement
TECHNICAL DRAWINGS IN INTERIORS 4(1+3)
Lettering placement
Two important features should be considered in the placement of letters on a plan / drawing.
Orientation i.e the angle at which letter is placed
Location it is the precise position where it is placed on a drawing
The following will show the probable and universally acceptable placements
Titles & subtitles:
Title block contains the project title and address, designer firms name and address.
Horizontal read left to right, aligned with left edge of the drawing & underlined.
Scale is incorporated beneath the underline of the title. The scale should be sized about half the height of the title.
Subtitles 3/16” high, centered or aligned left and underlined
General notes, parts identification are located within the field of object or as claose as possible, all aligned left.
General notes, text block are located in any open area, and are either left or right aligned
Miscellaneous notes should be 3/32” high same as above but for less important information
Dimensioning is generally centered.
Text block:
Two type of text blocks – one which relates to the whole or major part of a drawing and notes which individually identify the components of a drawing.
Horizontal orientation is the rule and can be located wherever there is open space on the drawing. Left guidelines can also be useful.
Material notes:
Should be close to the object and orientation can be horizontal or vertical or in the same angle as the object and immediately adjacent to it.
The lettering should not touch the object lines.
An important rule in lettering is that it should not touch the object lines. If a note is placed near the object line the same rule for space between lines is applied. Leaders and terminators should start from the beginning or end or both if required, of the note.
