Window is originally referred to an unglazed hole in a roof. ‘Window’ in original Old English literally means ‘eye-hole’ and in Germanic language it is fenestra. The word ‘fenestration’ is still used to describe the arrangement of windows within a façade. Purpose of windows is recognized in building design as they provide light, view, and fresh air. These are highly valued as they contribute to the satisfaction, health, and productivity of building occupants. At present there is greater focus to human-centered design. Also, technical issues such as structure, moisture control, acoustics, and security requirement have gained special attention. The material employed for sashes, frames, and doors affects energy efficiency, durability, aesthetics, and cost.
