PREPARATION OF GENERAL SURGICAL PACK

The General surgical pack should be prepared as follows

  • The surgical pack wrapper should be spread over diamond fashion on the table so that one corner remains towards the left and one corner towards the right, one corner on the near side and the fourth corner to the far side.
  • The items should be assembled on the pack wrapper in such a way that when pack is opened the articles may be removed in the order in which they are to be used.

  • All the instruments surgical gowns, shrouds, gloves, and towels should be cleaned and dried well before preparing a surgical pack.
  • The surgical gown should be prepared for sterilization by folding it inside out with the sleeves back to back and then folding it a second time.
  • The gown should be placed on the table and straight end out so that all the folds match evenly.
  • It is then folded length wise from underarm seam over towards the tie edge in 12 – 14 cm roll.
  • The open side is placed down and beginning at the item, it is rolled up in an accordion fold.
  • Gauze sponges are made from a single layer of cotton gauze.
  • A 15cm square piece of gauze in folded in such a way so that loose ends are not present.
  •  six gauze sponges are usually kept in one packet.
  • Gloves whether new (or) used should be tested for holes, dusted inside and out with talcum powder.
  • The cuff of each glove is turned back 5-6cm. A packet containing 1 or 2 of talcum powder should accompany each pair of gloves. These gloves are put in the glove case.
  • On the wrap, first the instrument and gauze sponges are laid out.
  • Over these surgical shrouds with and without slit, gloves, surgical gowns and towels are put serially and the wrap is closed with a knot (or) a safety pin.
  • Face masks and caps are wrapped separately and kept in surgical drum

  • General surgical pack should be sterilized in a autoclave at 15 pounds pressure for 15 minutes at 121 degree Celsius.
  • The pack, after sterilization should be opened on the top of instrument table before the operation.
  • The inside of the wrap which is sterilied thus becomes the covering of the table top.
