PREPARATION OF SURGICAL PACK

  • Regardless of the techniques used for sterilization, instrument and liner (Eg. Towels, gowns and drapes) must be cleaned of gross contamination.
  • Instruments should be cleaned normally (or) with ultrasonic cleaning equipment and appropriate disinfectants as soon as after surgery as possible and liners should be laundered.
  • Items sterilized by pressurized steam (or) alternate methods. (eg. Ethylene oxide, plasma) must be wrapping items based on enhancing the ease of sterilization and preserving sterility of the item, not convenience (or) personal preference.
  • Before packing ,instrument are separated and placed in orderĀ of their intended use.
  • If steam (or) gas sterilization is used, the selected wrap should be penetrable be steam/ gas, impermeable to microbes, durable and flexible.
  • Packing materials available, their advantages, disadvantages of each and the sterilization technique with which each is compatible are listed in the next chapter.
