Sampling Units
- Each sample should represent 2 ½ acres or less for best characterization of the variability within the field, to serve as a guide for variable-rate application of plant nutrients.
- Where field variability is low, larger sample areas are acceptable; where variability is high; more samples are needed to adequately represent the field. Each field is to be treated as a separate sampling unit.
- Further, fields with varying soil types, slope and past management practices such as fertilization, liming and cropping pattern need to be treated as separate sampling units.
