Module 5&6:Planning, Implementing and Evaluation of Stimulation Programme for Infants (birth – 6 months)
Activities for visual stimulation
Initially children visually attend to stationary objects and then follow movements and moving objects.
Move bright coloured objects slowly across the baby’s vision. Ex. Swing a flash light in a darkened room, swing slowly at first and little faster in different patterns such as lines and circles.
Hang brightly coloured mobiles about 14 inches over the crib. Change the mobile positions and the items suspended from it every week or two.
Babies like sharp contrasts of shape and colours (black and white), especially they like faces.
Put baby- safe mirrors in the crib. Hang aluminum pie plates on a string from the ceiling. Place big colorful pictures like animals, family members all over the house at eye level and place some lower when the baby is on the floor.
Use bright and uncluttered pictures of familiar objects like feeding bottles, nursing babies, cradles from baby magazines.
Hide some pictures behind doors, curtains and other safe places to surprise and delight the baby. Change the pictures to prevent boredom.
Talk to the baby about what he sees. Hold the baby straight up in your arms by supporting his head so he can see over your shoulder.
