Assists number of developing countries to strengthen public health services

WHO had assisted India in establishing Primary Health Centers and sub-centers in rural areas. Plans emerging from a review of issues and priorities by the six WHO regional offices include, for example, special attention to immunization against the five major childhood diseases, the strengthening and development of appropriate technology for the care of the mother and new born, a large-scale study of oriental mortality, and the establishment of national teacher-training programmes in maternal and child health care in three regions. Additionally WHO has either initiated or strengthened activities in the areas of pre and perinatal care, reduction in the number of low-weight births, eradication of neo-natal tetanus, abolition of Vitamin 'A' and '0' deficiency diseases, reduction in the death rate due to diarrheal diseases and promotion of breast feeding and proper infant and young nutrition.
