Lesson 1 : Introduction to Personality Development

Id

At birth a child’s personality consists of unconscious drives based on instincts. Id is based on pleasure principle. Id strives for immediate satisfaction of its drives. According to Freud in order to eliminate tension, the child uses two mechanisms-

  • Reflex actions: involuntary response to environmental stimulus. Eg. Sucking reflex.
  • Primary – process thinking: Thinking that involves creating a fantasy.
