Lesson 15: Environmental pollution

Case study

According to WHO, New Delhi is the fourth most polluted city in the world. According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Ahmedabad’s air is the most noxious, followed by Kanpur, Sholapur and Lucknow. Being exposed to Sulfur dioxide and suspended particulate matter released from industries, the Taj Mahal has contracted ‘marble cancer’, a fungal growth that corroded its surface giving it a yellowish finge. The Supreme Court ordered 292 industries around the Taj Mahal to either adopt pollution control measures or shut down.
