FUNCTIONAL INTERIORS FOR SPECIAL NEEDS 4(2+2)
Lesson 8: Housing Environments for Special purposes and Needs: Adaptable Bathrooms and Kitchen

Floor

Slip resistant floor surfaces should be provided in the kitchen, laundry, bathroom and toilet with slope graded floors to prevent stagnation of water. When a shower has been designed for unrestricted access, i.e. without a fixed screen, the entire floor must slope towards the floor shower floor trap.

In the kitchen and dining areas, similar textured floor finishes should be provided because any changes in these surfaces can contribute to accidents, for instance when food or drinks are carried between these rooms. Avoid all loose carpet pieces, rugs and runners. If used, they must be securely fastened to the floor for their full perimeter, have a low pile height and not be laid over an existing carpet.

Eliminate glare by avoiding highly reflective floor and bench surfaces.
