Cupboard doors

FUNCTIONAL INTERIORS FOR SPECIAL NEEDS 4(2+2)
Lesson 22 : Principles of Designing Interiors for the Visually Impaired

Cupboard doors

  • Hinged side-hung doors present a safety problem; possible alternatives are sliding doors or open shelving. Glass sliding doors should not be used unless they have suitable marking.

Colour

  • Door colours should contrast with the surrounding walls and floor surface. Door furniture (handles, numbers, mail slot etc) should contrast in colour with the door.

Switches

  • All light switches, dimming devices, fan switches etc. can be horizontally aligned with door handles at 1000mm above the plane of the finished floor and not less than 500mm from internal corners.

Colour

  • Switches should contrast with the wall and be the same colour as power outlets. The buttons on switches and power outlets and the plug indicators on power outlets should be contrasted with the facing.
  • Buildings should be controlled for glare. Interior & exterior lighting should be appropriate for people with reduced vision.
