All the sewing machines are equipped with a control through which one can change the stitch length. This feature on the sewing machine is called stitch regulator. It is possible to vary the stitch length from 6 to 30 stitches per inch. This stitch regulator is numbered from 0 to 5 and 0 to -5 for reverse stitching. Stitch length is dependent on
Fabric Type: In general average weight fabrics like poplin, gingham require 14-16 stitches per inch, fine and sheer fabrics (voile, lawn) about 16-20 stitches per inch, Coarse fabrics like denim, corduroy require 12-14 stitches per inch. The heavier the fabric the longer the stitch, the finer the fabric shorter the stitch length.
To test the appropriateness of a stitch length for the fabric, stitch a seam, press open and pull gently at right angles to the seam. If the seam spreads apart and reveals stitches, then the length of stitch is considered to be long. For stretch fabrics like Jersey, a short stitch length is used.
Purpose of Stitch: The purpose of the stitch influences the stitch length.
