Methods of pattern making

Pattern making is one of the earliest steps in the development of a garment. It is a craft that has become a skilled technical process. Patterns can be formed by either 2D or 3D process and a combination of methods are used to create a pattern. The most commonly used 2D pattern making methods are as follows.

  1. Drafting

  2. Flat pattern

  5. More advanced 3D methods of pattern making are

  6. Pattern Design Systems (PDS)

PDS systems utilize computers and are capable of storing a large amount of data which can be quickly retrieved, changed and re-filed. Using a mouse or stylus, patternmakers can rapidly add style details and make changes to an existing pattern. There are many benefits to PDS - speed, accuracy and ease of data transmission etc.
