Lesson 11:Use Of Multipupose Furniture

Space Saving Furniture

Storage compartments in furniture, designed mainly for another purpose can be great space savers. Beds, for example, may have drawers underneath, useful for storing blankets, linen, or other articles. The other simplest example of multipurpose storage furniture is the simplest piece of an ottoman - a seat about 1,200 mm. (4 ft) long without back or arms. Under the seat is a trunk suitable for blanket storage.

When buying a bed with drawers, remember that it must stand in a position where the drawers can be opened. A standard size double bed needs about 900 mm. (3 ft) of space on each side for the drawers to be opened fully.
Convertible bed settees often have space in the base for bedding to be stored. Armchairs and matching stools are available with storage space below both seats.

Occasional tables often include space for magazine and book storage, and there are designs with lift-up top and interiors that can be used for drinks, toys, needlework or papers.
