Fitted Cupboards

Fitted cupboards are made from prefabricated parts designed so that they can be built into a room from floor to ceiling and, if required, from wall to wall. Some are designed for do-it-yourself assembly, others are fitted by the retailer or a builder. g

Although they are intended mainly for bedroom storage, cupboards can be used in any part of the house where there is a convenient space.

Some fitted cupboard systems are simply from floor-to-ceiling. The doors are hung on metal track fixed to the ceiling, and a guide track for the door bottoms can be laid over carpeting. The bottom door guides include springs to compensate for the unevenness of floors.

Other systems are made up of separate units that can be linked together. They are usually about 450-600 mm. (1½-2 ft) in length and width.

Manufacturers usually make fitted cupboards in several different heights. If you cannot get a cupboard at the exact nheight required, a small gap between the top of the cupboard and the ceiling can be paneled in. vertical panels can be used to fill gaps between cupboards and walls.

Make sure the type of door you choose is suitable for the space available a round a cupboard. Doors side hung on hinges give maximum access to the cupboard, but there must be enough space in front for the door to be opened.
Cupboard doors can be papered to match the room if desired, and some are made so that the panels can be removed and covered to match curtains or wallpaper.
