Relation Between a Family and Household

Family: In simple words family is a group of persons related by blood, marriage or adoption, residing together in a dwelling, sharing a common table and receiving its support from a common purse.

It is a social group characterized by living in common residence, economic cooperation and reproduction. It contains adults of both sexes, at least two of whom maintain a socially approved sexual relationship, and one or more children, own or adopted, of the sexually cohabiting adults.



Household: A household is a kind of family unit, though households can be other social groups, such as single persons, or groups of unrelated individuals.

  • It may constitute members of the same sex who live together and share a common table.
  • All family groups are households, but all households are not families.
  • Large group of persons living in institutions, residence hotels, college fraternities, large houses are termed as Quasi- Household.
