Lesson 06:Landscape Styles

Introduction

Garden is a purposefully designed space around the house to enrich the life of human beings. A well planned and maintained garden develops man’s aesthetic awareness and helps people to ponder the values of life. For a landscape designer, a garden becomes a mediating space that brings together the contrasts of technical and organic substance of geometric and natural form, and of human and the infinite scale of nature and God. Different styles can be incorporated while designing landscape. There is no limit to the potential range of garden designs. Various styles have provided inspiration for the garden design. Combining two or more styles may also be effective. The historic styles of gardening were originated in various parts of the world under the influence of the country and its people. The major factors influenced were

  • Topography
  • Country of Origin
  • Climate
  • Vegetation
  • Material of Construction
  • The people, their functions and purpose such as pleasure, comfort, magnificence and grandeur or display of social status.

In the history of garden making, initially there have been two styles, the formal and the informal. Thereafter, the ideas of landscape style, freestyle and wild garden styles were developed.
